Три мої проекти з Кітом Іганом - це якраз ті випадки, коли фраза "Працювати з Вами було задоволенням" не лишається порожньою ввічливостю, а дійсно передає враження від процесу і результату. Будь-хто, хто має досвід публікації англомовних академічних текстів, стикався з різними редакторами і знає як буває, коли вони просто механічно правлять текст. Але Кіт повертає віру у редакторів - він надзвичайно вдумливо працює з текстами і допомагає не просто відшліфувати стилістику та граматику, але весь текст, включаючи і аргументацію або "підсвічуючі" неочевидні для неконтекстуалізованого читача місця, які варто уточнити. Я також отримав від нього багато дуже змістовних порад щодо аргументації. Важливо ж що у англомовних академічних текстах йдеться не просто про іншу мову письма, але і інший стиль побудови абзаців, вибудови ланцюжку аргументації. Для українських авторів це не завжди очевидні речі, пов'язані з іншою традицією. Але Кіт допомагає отримати літературно вивірений і академічно грамотний англомовний текст.
Тож після роботи над текстом з Кітом вже не так переймаєшся за долю тексту, коли він попаде далі до редактора якогось журналу.
Саме тому після першого спільного з Кітом проектом я шукав можливості до продовження співпраці з іншими публікаціями.
Ну і відзначу, що завдяки стилю роботи Кіта - він не тільки править але і пояснює чому саме - проект для автора дає якраз нагоду повчитися англійському академічному стилю. Але, не хочу залякувати - це стосується тільки тих, хто бажає. Звісно, Кіт може зробити і сам все "під ключ", не змушуючи напружуватися клієнта за відсутності бажання. Але його стиль роботи - це просто фантастична знахідка для авторів, яким важлива точність і відповідність кожної фрази в їхніх текстах.
My three projects with Keith are precisely the cases where the phrase “It was a pleasure working with you” is not merely polite. Keith restores faith in devoted editorial work—he works with texts in an extremely thoughtful way and helps not only to polish the style and grammar but also to strengthen the entire text, including the argumentation, and to highlight places that are not obvious to a reader without context and need to be clarified. I also received a lot of very meaningful advice from him on argumentation. It is important to note that English-language academic texts are not just about a different language of writing but also about a different style of paragraph construction and the structure of argumentation. For Ukrainian authors, these things are not always obvious, as they are associated with a different academic writing tradition. In this regard, Keith helps not only to produce a text that is literally accurate but also to ensure it is academically and stylistically accurate in English. I would also like to note that, thanks to Keith's style of work—he not only edits but also explains why he makes those edits — he gives the author an opportunity to learn the academic style of English. This cooperation is simply fantastic for authors who value accuracy and consistency in every sentence of their texts. So, after working on a text with Keith, you are no longer so concerned about the fate of that text when it goes on to the editor of a journal.
I would also like to note that, thanks to Keith's style of work—he not only edits but also explains why—the project gives the author an opportunity to learn English academic style. But I don't want to scare anyone off—this only applies to those who want it. Of course, Keith can do every edit himself, without forcing the client to make an effort if they don't want to. But his work style is simply fantastic for authors who value accuracy and consistency in every sentence of their texts.
